We own a lot of Nerf guns. If you have young boys you know what I mean. With Christmas just around the corner, every nine year old probably wants a new Nerf Gun for Christmas 2011. The new Nerf Family of guns out this year is the Nerf Vortex series. This year the flagship Nerf gun is the Nerf Vortex Nitron. It is the biggest and meanest gun in the Vortex series.

This is the grand daddy of all the Nerf guns out this year. This thing is a battery powered monster. It’s the first full-auto Nerf blaster. It features an acceleration trigger which flings Frisbee-like ammo at targets up to 50 feet away. It’s even got a scope. It includes a 20 disc magazine and can store a second magazine to keep reloading times to a minimum.

We were kind of worried when we heard these Nerf guns wouldn’t be using the traditional foam darts but instead would hurl round Frisbee-discs. Well now that the Nerf Vortex Nitron is out, we think it will probably be one of the hottest toys of the season. This is the best Nerf gun of 2011.

First of all the box is absolutely massive. Everything is easy to remove and tightly fastened. Inside the box you will find the Nitron Blaster itself, the 20 round magazine, 20 rounds of disk ammo, the electronic scope, and the instructions.

The first thing you will notice is that this is a great looking gun. It’s a mean looking gun. Don’t stare at it too long or else you may get punched in the face. It's stylish and cool-looking and reminds us of a blaster gun you would see in a video game. It looks like it came out an alien world with its lime, gray, and orange body.

The body of the blaster is well detailed with lots of squared off edges and some pretty elaborate chiseled areas. We really like the look and gripping it feels right.

It really melts in your hands thanks to the ergonomically designed grips. There are two grips on the gun. One is in the middle and one is located in the front. The front grip is not removable which actually makes it sturdier and less likely to slip when making sudden movements. It’s great for running around and lining up shots.

Unlike other models, the weight is really distributed well and you can easily manipulate the gun around. The battery weight is right over the middle handle so the gun doesn’t feel back heavy.

Overall it’s a well designed Nerf gun.

This year Nerf abandoned darts for disc-shaped foam ammo. Their shape allows them to travel further than darts. They really do fly thanks to their innovative lightweight design. The foam discs are about an inch and half in diameter. They are made of soft plastic and foam on the outside.

These discs are shaped like mini Frisbees. They are rubber so they don’t hurt when you get hit even at close range. These discs have a tendency to ricochet off things. The only problem with the discs is because they are green they can be difficult to find in grass. These foam discs slip into the included spring loaded clip that holds 20 foam discs.

You can hold a spare clip(sold separately) on the back of the gun. This is great if you want easy access to another clip and its placement doesn’t get in your way either.

The included electronic scope slides on the N-Strike rail on the top of the gun. The scope can light up and flash. The scope has three settings which control how fast the lights move inside the scope. Their speed can be toggled by an orange button on the side. There is fast, slow, stationary, and off.

There are multiple layers of plastic inside the scope. So it kind of looks like you are sort of zooming in but you are not really. It does look cool. However, it’s more of a cool gimmick than actually being useful for aiming. Additionally, the scope is sort of loose and has a tendency to wobble around on the gun.

The Nerf Vortex Blaster is a battery powered blaster. It doesn’t function without batteries. It takes 6 C cell batteries to run the blaster which are not included inside the box. The battery compartment is located under the gun. It requires a Philips screwdriver to remove the 3 screws to open the compartment. The scope takes an additional two AAA batteries. However, the gun can function without the batteries in the scope.

The first thing you do is load the magazine cartridge in. There is a magazine release on the side which allows you to eject the cartridge in order to reload it. There is a safety located on the top of the gun which shuts off the shooting mechanism. This is great when you want to store your gun.

Firing the Nerf Vortex Nitron is a bit different than your traditional Nerf gun. There are two triggers. Press down the acceleration trigger under the main trigger to revv up your shot. Then you press the traditional trigger to fire the disc. It takes some practice but you will get the hang of it in no time. Nerf is called this technology Xtra Long-Range (XLR) because it allows this Nerf Gun to get tremendous range.

Since the triggers are so close together it makes them very accessible. Because the discs are launched through a fly wheel mechanism, this mechanism makes the gun a bit noisy. Although it’s a distinction nobody with notice, the discs aren’t actually fired but are instead hurled through the air by the discs angular momentum.

This is an automatic gun. It shoots at a rate of 1 disc per second. It takes about 20 seconds to unload a full clip if you hold the trigger.

The range of the shots is between 40 to 50 feet.

The Nerf Nitron uses a fly wheel accelerator to spin the disc above the magazine in order to build the momentum of the shot. In fact, this is what the batteries are used for.The only problem with this is that you will notice that if you line up the sights on the top of the gun, it will shoot out to the side by about 10 degrees. The reason for this is that the gun shoots a spinning disc which is essentially a small Frisbee. As a result the shots hook to the side because of its design. It’s not perfect but if you are aware of this it is easy to compensate for.
